Emma Wilson: A Short Biography

Born and bred in the gorgeous North Yorkshire moors Emma began singing with the local Blues and Jazz Bands at 16.Her first gig was at "The Hare" in Scawton , a tiny little pub buried deep in the moors but well attended by the locals including the boys from the nearby Ampleforth College.

Emma was totally into to Aretha Franklin, Motown, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald (who she saw live at Juan Le Pins Jazz Festival when she was 12) and would take a bus trip to Austins Record Shop in Middlesborough where Austin would suggest more artists for her to listen to and got her into Ann Peebles, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Cassandra Wilson.

There were lots of bands in the area who were looking for singers and Emma took all the opportunities to gig and eventually joined a wonderful Soul Revue Band called "LTK and The Barhops" - this was the band that really made her work hard as a singer and understand about being in a band and on the road.

Emma's Brother Simon Wilson and Cousin Davy Simpson's band 29 Palms were signed to IRS records in 1991 and Emma is proud to have sung backing vocals on their 2 albums (No Eden and Fatal Joy) and subsequent singles (Magic Man and Funny Peculiar)

"I think there's a tambourine credit too!"  - Emma

During this time Emma began working as a session singer and eventually that work brought her to London - but as much fun as sessions are its nothing like playing live and soon Emma started writing her own songs and got together with Jason Feddy (from Harrogate via LA) who played guitar for her and they played at gigs such as The Mean Fiddler acoustic room in Harlsden, The Kashmir Klub, and the 12 Bar Club. Emma opened for Irish songstress Mary Black and for Martyn Joseph then went on to sing on Martyn's single "Lets talk about it in the Morning" (Sony).

Emma's sound is very versatile and she has has a great band Emma Wilson Band who have just released their CD "Valentine" (please look at the band page for more) and also works on many other projects such as recording her own album of Jazz and Latin inspired songs "Rhythm of the Heart" (go to media) with guest Saxophonist Don Weller.

Emma has also performed with lots of other great musicians including Zoe Rahman, The Mark Mondesir Band, Jim Mullen, Snake Davis and has recently sung backing vocals for a new album by Mitch Hiller.
